Assessing the semantic similarity of terms is identified is an important step in many real world applications ranging from information retrieval systems to Geographic Information Science (GIS). In geographic information science and semantics, the computation of semantic similarity and relatedness is widely recognized as key to supporting a vast number of tasks in information integration and retrieval. By contrast, the role of them has been largely ignored in this context. In this paper, the notion of geographic semantic relatedness and similarity is discussed and their impotence is highlighted in task of Geographic Information System. Subsequently, various measures conducted in this filed for computing semantic relatedness of geographic terms are reviewed and their potentials and drawbacks are mentioned. The article concludes by comparing the similarity measures and giving general advice how to choose an appropriate semantic similarity and relatedness  measure. Advantages and disadvantages point to their suitability for different tasks.
